Meg Reads to … Peru

peru book

Go and Come Back by Joan Abelove is set in the Isabo village in Peru.  It is told from the point of view of Alicia a teen aged girl who is a member of the tribe.  When two old white ladies (who are really not that old) come to her village, their way of doing things seems strange and often rude to Alicia and the other Isabo.

As the Isabos and the women anthropologists, who are there to study and learn about the Isabo tribe, begin to communicate more with each other they come to understand their differences and learn to adapt to each other’s ways.  Later when Missionaries also come to visit, the anthropologists, who have been at the village for some time now, finally understand how they at first seemed so rude and stingy to the Isabo when they first arrived.
